Inter are a World-renowned team and their list of honours is impressive. On the European and International scene, Inter have won, the Champions League/Cup 3 times, 3 UEFA Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA Club World CupFor Inter, currently occupying 5th place in the Serie A, this will be their fourth visit to Malta and the sixth match against local opposition. On the 27th September 1972, Inter beat Valletta City FC 1-0 at the old Empire Stadium, in Gzira, in the second leg of a UEFA Cup Season 1972/73 tie, after winning the first leg 6-1 at the then called San Siro Stadium. In Season 1978/79, on the 13thSeptember 1978, once more at the Gzira Empire Stadium, Inter defeated Floriana FC 3-1 in the first leg of the now defunct Cup Winners Cup, with the Neroazzurri, triumphing 5-0 in the second leg in Milan, a couple of days after.

The last time, that Inter played in Malta was on the 3rd September 2002, when at the National Stadium at Ta’Qali, they beat an MFA XI 2-0, in a match to mark the inauguration of the New Millennium Stand at the National stadium.

On the other hand, Gzira United will be renewing their Italian connection once again after having already played against another top Italian Serie A side Fiorentina on the 9th January 2019, as part of the Visit Malta Tournament, held at the National Stadium at Ta’Qali, also featuring local team Hibernians.

For Gzira United FC, after their successful participation in European Competitions in the past seasons, this will be another opportunity to pit the strength of their local and foreign players against the might of foreign opposition, and against Inter, the Maroons hope to threaten the Neroazzurri’s five match consecutive winning streak against Maltese teams.
